The Trouble is with The Roasting...
The problem is not coffee itself , but a chemical called acrylamide , released when the beans are roasted.
Based on animal research , it is regarded as a probable or likely carcinogen.
That is not Certain , Through...
1. No one knows what the levels of acrylamide are safe or risky. The US has acrylamide limits for potable
water , but none for foods.
2. The 'probable' or 'likely' carcinogen label is based on studies of animals given high levels of acrylamide.
3. But people absorb the chemical at different rates and its relevance to human health is not known.
So Why was Coffee Pulled Up ?
1. Since 1986 , businesses in California are required post warnings about chemicals known to cause cancer or if they posses s other health risks.
2. A group wanted coffee makers to remove acrylamide from it is processing or disclose the danger through a warning ad so moved court.
The Case for Coffee...
- WHO's cancer scientists in 2016 decided coffee was unlikely to cause breast , prostate or pancreatic cancers.
- It actually seemed to lower the risks for liver and uterine cancers.
- US dietary guidelines say up to five cups of coffee a day can be part of the healthy diet.
